CyanogenMod 10.1 for Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos: Retrospective

If you found this page while clearing out a drawer and wondering what that little Samsung phone in it can still do — welcome. This post was originally published in January 2013, when unofficial CyanogenMod 10.1 builds for the Galaxy Ace were small miracles worked by hobbyist developers. A lot has changed since: CyanogenMod itself no longer exists. I've kept the original build notes below as a record, and added what actually happened to this device and these projects in the years since.

Quick Answer: CyanogenMod 10.1 (Android 4.2.1) unofficial builds for the Samsung Galaxy Ace were community projects last updated in 2013. CyanogenMod shut down on December 31, 2016, and its download servers went with it. The successor project, LineageOS, never officially supported the Ace's ARMv6 chip — so today this phone stays on its stock Gingerbread firmware.

The Phone This Was Written For

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos (GT-S6802) shipped in 2011 with a 3.5-inch 320×480 screen, an 832 MHz Broadcom chip, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. By early 2013 that hardware was three Android generations behind, which is exactly why the custom ROM scene loved it: the phone was cheap, widespread, and desperately in need of the newer Android experience.

The Original Build Notes (January 2013)

The build in question was a Beta 6 release from the androidarmv6 community, dated 21 January 2013. For the record, here's what that release contained and how it behaved — genuinely useful if you're holding one of the handful of devices still running it.

What the release changed:

  • Proprietary libraries updated to match the latest stock ROM versions
  • Audio and camera HAL updates, including better camera preview handling
  • Offline charging fix and kernel improvements (compcache removed, zram added)
  • Gmail removed from the package (installable separately)
  • BLN (backlight notification) support disabled by default, togglable via app
  • GPS rebuilt from sources with updated configuration for faster locks
  • Wi-Fi sleep policy defaulted to "never"

What worked: GPS, camera photos and video, Google Play, Wi-Fi, mobile data, audio, hardware acceleration, multi-touch, sensors, USB storage, calls, and Bluetooth.

Known bugs: audio occasionally routed to the handset instead of a connected headset; the secure Wi-Fi hotspot didn't work; the compass was non-functional.

The flashing procedure, as it stood then: copy the ROM to the SD card, boot recovery (Home + Power), install from SD card, wipe data and Dalvik cache, reboot — then flash Google Apps separately, since the build didn't include them. A Nandroid backup before flashing was non-negotiable, and boot loops were usually fixed by pulling and reseating the battery.

What Happened to CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod's story ended in December 2016. Cyanogen Inc., the company behind it, shut down its infrastructure, and the nightly downloads and wiki that made the project accessible went offline with it. Within weeks the community re-formed as LineageOS, which picked up the codebase and the mission — modern Android for devices their manufacturers had abandoned.

LineageOS is alive and well in 2026: version 23.2, based on Android 16, arrived in February 2026, and the project supports a long list of Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, and Samsung devices. What it doesn't support is the Galaxy Ace. The Ace family's ARMv6 processors were dropped by Android's own build tools years before LineageOS started, and no official build exists — anyone claiming to offer a "LineageOS download for Galaxy Ace" today is pointing at either an abandoned 2016-era unofficial port or something worse.

Can You Still Install This ROM Today?

Realistically, no — and you shouldn't try:

  • The downloads are gone. The host servers community builders used in 2013 have been dead for years. Any file you find mirrored today is unverified, and flashing an unverified ROM image is the classic way people brick old phones.
  • Google Apps for 4.2.1 are gone too. Google progressively cut off older Android versions from Play Services; even a working CM10.1 install can't sign into a modern Google account reliably.
  • The security story is bleak. A 2013 Android build has over a decade of unpatched vulnerabilities. On a phone you don't use for anything sensitive that's a curiosity; on anything connected to your accounts it's a problem.

What This Device Is Good For in 2026

The honest answer: as a project object, not a phone. Retro-tech enthusiasts keep Galaxy Aces alive as music players, offline camera gadgets, or doorbell computers. If you want a genuine modern-Android experience on old hardware, the realistic path is a phone LineageOS officially supports — a used OnePlus or Xiaomi device from the project's supported list will cost little and run a current, patched Android 16.

And if your actual goal is just a faster old phone you still use daily, the rooting-and-flashing route is mostly obsolete: modern Android's "disable app" feature, lightweight launchers, and debloating via ADB achieve most of what a custom ROM once did, without unlocking the bootloader.

FAQ

What was CyanogenMod 10.1?

CyanogenMod 10.1 was a community-built Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean distribution for devices that never received official updates — like the 2011 Galaxy Ace. It replaced the stock firmware entirely, bringing newer Android features, performance tweaks, and customization. Unofficial builds like this one were maintained by individual developers using the shared androidarmv6 codebase.

Is CyanogenMod still available for download?

No. CyanogenMod's infrastructure shut down on December 31, 2016, and its official download servers no longer exist. The project's spiritual successor, LineageOS, distributes its own builds at lineageos.org, but it has never supported the Galaxy Ace's ARMv6 hardware.

Can a Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos run Android 4.2 or newer today?

Only with the last unofficial community builds from 2013, which are effectively unavailable and unsafe to install now. No supported path to newer Android exists for this device — its processor was abandoned by Android toolchains shortly after, and no official custom ROM project ever adopted it.

Is rooting a Galaxy Ace still worthwhile?

For daily use, no — the security risk of unpatched firmware outweighs the benefits, and modern tricks (ADB debloating, launcher replacements) don't need root. For experimentation or nostalgia, rooting on a device you can afford to break remains a valid hobby; just treat every 2013-era download as unverified.

What replaced CyanogenMod?

LineageOS, forked from CyanogenMod's final code within weeks of the December 2016 shutdown. It releases quarterly updates, currently ships Android 16-based builds as of early 2026, and officially supports dozens of devices from brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, and Samsung.

Why did CyanogenMod shut down?

The community project and Cyanogen Inc. (the company commercializing it) had a famously strained relationship. When the company wound down in late 2016, it revoked the infrastructure the project depended on. The code lived on immediately through LineageOS, which the same community built.

The Galaxy Ace's CyanogenMod chapter closed years ago, but the impulse behind it — squeezing new life from old hardware — is exactly what keeps LineageOS thriving on supported devices today. If you're chasing that feeling in 2026, pick hardware the community still builds for.

Hi, there are 2 major types of risks while doing so. Soft brick and hard brick. You can identify which has happened by simply connecting your charger. If your phone responds to the charging, it’s soft brick otherwise, it’s hard brick. If hard brick occurred, nothing will help except approaching with Samsung care.

Unfortunately , I’ve been damaged my sga 6802 three time and the problem was soft brick by flashing this custom Rom android 4.0,bla bla bla.
Thi Rom is not tested and not supported s6802 .
So if you want to flash a custom Rom you can download and flash A-DROID ROM BY AASHISH.
I hope s6802 users will not damage own smartphone!

Hi Pawan, what actually happened was, the first link has been replaced with CM for SGA by mistake and it was an error from the develepor side. BTW, I have already corrected the link with A-Droid ROM. Check it our. 😀

    Hello Sid,

What is the status the SCH – i589 ROM? Some guys at the xda forums have a chineses version, do you have an Indian version?
Also what custom recovery did you use?

    Will appreciate a prompt reply..

      Hi Daisy,

I guess it might be out by now. As far as custom recovery is concerned, Sid uses CWM.

      Thanks,

U have to reemove the checking mechanism from updater script to be able to flash rom.
This rom will not flash on anything except s5380 or the one the rom is for
U have to go in meta inf and open the updaterscript and remove a few lines of code to be able to make it flashable

Just take a nandroid backup via CWM recovery. If anything goes wrong, you restore this backup.

Comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the likes of the HTC One and
Apple i – Phone 5 is inevitable. Underneath the screen there is a Home button, with a capacitive menu.
What appears on both phones’ screens is very customizable, which is
nice because I really didn’t like the way they were set up out of the box.
