A Nandroid backup before flashing was non-negotiable, and boot loops were usually fixed by pulling and reseating the battery.

What Happened to CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod's story ended in December 2016. Cyanogen Inc., the company behind it, shut down its infrastructure, and the nightly downloads and wiki that made the project accessible went offline with it. Within weeks the community re-formed as LineageOS, which picked up the codebase and the mission — modern Android for devices their manufacturers had abandoned.

LineageOS is alive and well in 2026: version 23.2, based on Android 16, arrived in February 2026, and the project supports a long list of Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, and Samsung devices. What This Device Is Good For in 2026

The honest answer: as a project object, not a phone. Retro-tech enthusiasts keep Galaxy Aces alive as music players, offline camera gadgets, or doorbell computers. If you want a genuine modern-Android experience on old hardware, the realistic path is a phone LineageOS officially supports — a used OnePlus or Xiaomi device from the project's supported list will cost little and run a current, patched Android 16.

And if your actual goal is just a faster old phone you still use daily, the rooting-and-flashing route is mostly obsolete: modern Android's "disable app" feature, lightweight launchers, and debloating via ADB achieve most of what a custom ROM once did, without unlocking the bootloader.
