With technological innovation growing fast, the world is becoming more gadget-driven. People are quick to buy the latest devices and dispose of old ones. As we tend to abandon past appliances, it quickly increases the level of e-waste.

Old gadgets have e-waste, which contains dangerous chemicals such as mercury, beryllium, and lead. Improper disposal of old gadgets and devices releases these lethal chemicals into the environment. This may lead to dire consequences such as health risks or even genetic mutations. Here are some Eco-friendly tips on how to properly dispose of your old electronics.

Recycle

Many local governments across the world recognize the problem posed by e-waste to their communities. They have, therefore, dedicated special events to help residents get rid of old electronics responsibly. It’s crucial to inquire about the types of products accepted before dropping your old electronics off. Some local recycling facilities allow used electronics at any time of the year.

For instance, e-waste recycling provides flexible services that work on your terms. All you need need to do is call or fill an online form to have the items picked.

Donate

If your used gadget is still functioning or repairable, there is probably a charity or non-profit organization that will be happy to reuse it. Start by checking local organizations. If you have some electronics you feel are outdated, and they still have some life, you can also donate to people who would not otherwise have access to them. The same thing you can do with your old furniture. You can donate it with the help of Salvation Army Pickup.

Return to the Manufacturer

Some electronic manufacturers have an exchange policy where they can take back old gadgets in exchange for the latest version. Sometimes they offer a discount or a trade-in option for returning old models.

Many electronic manufacturers often have recycling programs with drop-off points for gadgets such as tablets and cell phones. You can ask for this information from your local electronics shop.

Sell Your Old Electronics

If your electronics are still valuable, make some money off them by selling them. You can make use of online marketing platforms by listing your items for buyers to bid. This way, you will get rid of the old items quickly and effectively without sending them to a landfill.

Rent a Dumpster

When recycling is not an option, and you are disposing of old electronics as a part of a house cleanout, rent a dumpster. This is not only convenient but also an economical way to get rid of a large chunk of garbage at once. It can help you to get rid of electronics you don’t need without having to worry about moving them to individual collection sites.

While at this, choose a dumpster that fits your cleanout project. You can keep it on-site for as long as you need it. However, not all electronics are allowed in dumpsters; a processing fee might be required. Call your local authority to find out the regulations in your area.

Check With Your Local Curbside Collection Service

In case you want to dispose of just a few electronics, you may put them on the curb or garbage can for collection. This is only applicable to small amounts of electronics. However, the collection may be specific types of electronics.

Bottom Line

Getting rid of old electronics may seem tricky, but there are various options for disposal. Before reselling or donating your old devices, take some time to back up any critical data, or transfer it to your new device. After this, wipe the old devices completely clean by deleting all the information you put there. Ensure you make the best out of your old gadgets to save money and keep the environment clean.
