Your laptop happily joins your phone’s hotspot — full signal, “Connected” — and then nothing loads. No sites, no apps, no ping. It’s the mobile-data version of the classic “connected, no internet” problem, and it’s usually fixable in a few minutes. The fault is almost always one of three things: the phone’s connection to your carrier, the Wi-Fi link between the two devices, or a Windows/Mac network setting that’s quietly blocking traffic.

Quick answer: first confirm the phone itself has internet (open a site on the phone). If it doesn’t, the hotspot is innocent — fix the phone’s data connection. If the phone works, reboot both devices, re-create the hotspot connection, and work through the Windows fixes below. The single most effective laptop-side fix people report — and the one most guides bury — is editing the hotspot’s name and password from Windows’ Mobile Hotspot settings and reconnecting.

Step 0: Find which of the three links is broken

A hotspot chain is phone → carrier → internet and phone → Wi-Fi → laptop. Test in this order:

TestWhat it means
Load a website on the phoneFails → phone/carrier problem (data off, plan exhausted, outage, APN). Fix the phone first.
Connect a second device (tablet, other laptop) to the hotspotWorks → the problem is your laptop’s Wi-Fi config, not the hotspot.
Move the laptop right next to the phoneImproves → weak 2.4 GHz signal or interference; our 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz explainer covers why this matters.

Phone-side fixes (5 minutes)

  1. Toggle the hotspot off and on, then toggle Airplane mode on the phone for ten seconds. This re-registers the data connection and fixes the majority of “was working yesterday” cases.
  2. Verify mobile data is on and the plan is alive. Check the carrier app or a web page on cellular data. Prepaid users: a lapsed recharge or exhausted high-speed quota still shows signal bars but passes no data. On Jio/Airtel/Vi in India — where this problem is especially common — an APN set to the wrong value does exactly this; reselect your carrier’s default APN under Settings → Mobile network → Access Point Names.
  3. Turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off before enabling the hotspot. Some phones (iPhones especially) won’t route hotspot traffic correctly with Wi-Fi active; Apple documents this class of quirk in its Personal Hotspot troubleshooting guide. On Android, Google’s own hotspot and tethering setup guide is the reference for the exact settings menu on your brand.
  4. Restart the phone. Clears stuck tethering services you can’t see or force-stop.

Laptop-side fixes: Windows 10/11

1. Forget the hotspot, then rejoin

Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks → your hotspot → Forget. Reconnect with the password. This clears the stale network profile — the laptop equivalent of toggling the hotspot.

2. The Windows update trap: edit the hotspot properties

This is the fix that repeatedly earns “most helpful” on Microsoft’s own Q&A for this exact symptom, especially when the problem appears right after a Windows update: go to Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot, expand Properties, click Edit, change the network name and/or password, save, then reconnect the laptop to the “new” network. It forces Windows to rebuild its connection profile from scratch — see the thread at Microsoft Learn Q&A: phone hotspot connected but no internet.

3. Reset the Wi-Fi adapter and flush DNS

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset

Restart the laptop afterward. This clears the address lease and the Winsock catalog — two things a flaky hotspot handshake corrupts easily. If pages then resolve by IP but not by name, it’s a pure DNS issue; our DNS server not responding guide goes deeper.

4. Reinstall the Wi-Fi driver

Win+X → Device Manager → Network adapters → right-click your Wi-Fi adapter → Uninstall device (tick “delete driver software” only if a reinstall has already failed) → restart. Windows reinstalls a clean driver on boot. “Update driver” alone often reports the best driver is already installed — uninstall-and-restart is the version that actually replaces a corrupted driver.

5. Check adapter sharing and power management

In Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network Connections, open your Wi-Fi adapter’s Properties: make sure no leftover Internet Connection Sharing checkbox (from an old VPN or virtual adapter setup) is interfering, and in Device Manager disable “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” on the adapter. Both produce exactly this symptom — connected, then silent.

Laptop-side fixes: Mac

  1. Remove and re-add the network: System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details (⋯) next to the hotspot → Forget This Network, then rejoin.
  2. Renew the DHCP lease: same Details panel → TCP/IP → Renew DHCP Lease.
  3. Flush DNS: Terminal → sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
  4. Delete Wi-Fi interface plists (last resort before an OS reinstall): in Finder’s Go → Go to Folder, open /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/, move the files starting com.apple.network and preferences.plist to the Desktop, restart, and rejoin. macOS rebuilds them clean.

If the browser alone fails after all this, the error page itself is the clue — our ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED guide covers that layer.

When it’s neither device: band congestion and interference

Hotspots ride the same 2.4 GHz airwaves as every router and microwave in range. In apartment blocks and offices, a hotspot that connects but crawls or stalls is often simply losing the airtime fight. Move the laptop within a couple of meters of the phone, and if your phone offers a 5 GHz hotspot band (iPhone 12 and later, most recent Androids), switch to it — fewer neighbors, more bandwidth. For the broader picture of squeezing more out of weak home Wi-Fi, see five ways to improve your current router. And if you hit the same “connected, no internet” wall on regular Wi-Fi networks too, the phone-side diagnosis is different — our Android Wi-Fi connected-but-no-internet guide covers that case end to end.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my laptop connect to the hotspot but say “no internet” while my tablet works fine?

Because the laptop saved a broken network profile or has a driver/sharing issue — the hotspot itself is healthy (that’s what the tablet proves). Forget the network on the laptop, run the ipconfig/netsh resets, and check adapter sharing.

Can a VPN on either device cause this?

Yes. A VPN with a dead server or expired subscription blocks all traffic while the connection itself stays up. Disable VPNs on both the phone and laptop before troubleshooting anything else.

Why does this happen every time Windows updates?

Updates replace network drivers and reset adapter bindings. The Mobile-hotspot Properties edit (fix #2) rebuilds the profile and is the fastest known workaround; if it recurs every update cycle, do the full driver reinstall once.

Does hotspot use the same data plan as my phone?

Yes — and on some plans (especially prepaid or “unlimited” tiers) hotspot data is capped separately and silently. If the phone browses fine but the hotspot passes nothing, check whether your hotspot quota is exhausted in the carrier app.

Is USB tethering a way around a broken Wi-Fi hotspot?

Usually yes, and it’s faster and more stable. Plug the phone in by cable and enable USB tethering (Android) or trust the prompt (iPhone). If USB works but Wi-Fi doesn’t, the problem is squarely the Wi-Fi link or the laptop’s wireless config.

The bottom line

Test the phone first — a hotspot can’t share an internet connection the phone doesn’t have. Then re-create the connection from both ends (forget/rejoin, hotspot Properties edit), reset the laptop’s network stack, and only then touch drivers. Keep the devices close, prefer the 5 GHz band, and remember hotspot data caps: the fix is sometimes a recharge, not a setting.
