1. Balatro: best paid game
$9.99, no ads, no in-app purchases. Balatro is poker in the way that chess is a board game: you play hands, but the point is the deck you build between them. Joker cards bend the scoring rules until a pair of twos can clear a blind that a straight flush could not touch, and the run structure means a bad decision costs you twenty minutes, not a purchase.
It arrived on the App Store in 2024 and has been updated constantly since, most recently in October 2026. If you buy one game from this list, make it this one: the official site lists the platforms it runs on.
2. Stardew Valley: best long-haul game
$4.99, one payment. This is the desktop game rather than a cut-down phone port, which is why people put 200 hours into it and why it still sits at 4.8 from 64,000 ratings; ConcernedApe's site lists the mobile release as the same game, not a separate edition. Farm, mine, fish, marry the librarian, repeat.
The touch controls take an hour to learn and the game is generous about letting you play at your own pace. It is the best value on this list by a wide margin, and it will run on a phone from several generations back.
3. Dead Cells: best action game
$8.99 from Playdigious, with paid expansion packs sold separately. A roguelike platformer that rewards fast hands and punishes greed, and one of the few mobile ports that feels native rather than tolerated. Touch controls work, but this is the one game on the list where a controller genuinely changes the experience.
4. Bloons TD 6: best tower defence
$6.99, no ads. Twenty-plus monkey types, dozens of maps and a co-op mode that works over the internet. The 4.9 average from 350,000 ratings is the most convincing number in this table, and Ninja Kiwi keeps shipping content years after launch, with the patch notes posted on the official Bloons site. Optional in-app purchases speed up progression; you can ignore all of them.
5. Monument Valley 3: best-looking puzzle
Free to download, with the first two chapters open and a single $5.99 purchase that unlocks the rest, including the Garden of Life expansion. ustwo's perspective puzzles are still the most beautiful thing on the App Store, and the third game adds tides and shifting architecture without breaking the formula. It is short, a few hours at most, and worth the price of a coffee.
6. Tetris: best free classic
Free, from Playstudios, with ads and optional purchases. This is the official Tetris, not one of the dozens of clones, and it has been updated as recently as October 2026. The modern version adds levels, missions and a stack of progression systems, but the classic mode is still underneath.
Worth knowing: if you remember paying for Tetris on an iPhone, that was EA's version, retired in April 2020.
7. Pokémon TCG Pocket: best card game for a commute
Free with in-app purchases. You open a couple of free packs a day, build a 20-card deck and play short matches against real people. The collection loop is the point, and the free pace is slow enough that you will feel the pull of the shop. Set a budget before you install.
At 4.8 from nearly 700,000 ratings, it is the most popular game on this list, and the only one where the daily habit is the design.
8. Unblock Me: best five-minute puzzle
Free with ads, or $0.99 for the ad-free premium version. Slide the blocks, free the red one, close the app. It has been on the store since the early days of the App Store, still gets updates, and remains the best thing to open while a kettle boils.
9. Hill Climb Racing 2: best one-thumb arcade
Free, from Fingersoft, with ads and in-app purchases. Physics-driven racing up impossible hills, with vehicle upgrades and short online races. The original is still updated too, but the sequel has the better progression and a much larger rating base.
10. ZigZag: best reflex game
Free with ads. One thumb, one ball, one zigzag path that speeds up until you flinch. It is a nine-year-old game that Ketchapp still patches, which says something about how well the loop works. Play it in portrait, with the sound off.

Are these games on Apple Arcade?
Several of them are, under a "+" name: Balatro+, Stardew Valley+, Dead Cells+ and Bloons TD 6+ are all included with an Apple Arcade subscription. If you already pay for Arcade, check there first. You get the same game without ads or in-app purchases, and the saves are separate from the paid versions.
Do I need a controller for any of these?
Only Dead Cells really benefits. It plays well with touch controls, but the timing windows are tight enough that a Bluetooth controller makes later runs far less frustrating. Everything else on this list is designed for a thumb, and Balatro in particular is better without one.
