How Much Does iOS App Development Cost in 2026?

Nobody can give you a reliable iOS app price from a headline number. The cost depends on what the app does, how it is designed, where the team is based and how long it takes to get right. What you can do is understand the cost drivers well enough to estimate your own budget, and to tell whether a quote makes sense.

Table of Contents
  • Start with the features, not the platform
  • Design: custom or template
  • The back end
  • Team and location
  • A simple way to estimate
  • Questions to ask every agency
  • Where the money usually goes wrong

Quick Answer: iOS app cost comes down to scope (how many features and screens), design (custom or template-based), back end (accounts, data and third-party services), the team's location and rates, and ongoing work after launch. Write down the core features, get two or three quotes against the same list, and budget for maintenance from day one.

Planning an iOS app budget

Start with the features, not the platform

Choosing iOS over Android rarely changes the cost by much on its own. The bigger driver is what the app does. A simple app that shows content and sends notifications is far cheaper than one with live chat, payments, offline sync and custom maps.

List the features your first version needs, and mark each as must-have or nice-to-have. Be strict. Every feature adds design, development and testing time, and a first release with ten polished features usually beats one with thirty half-built ones.

Design: custom or template

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines give you a good baseline, and iOS system components are polished out of the box. A template-based design with your branding costs less and launches faster. A fully custom design with unusual layouts, animations and illustrations costs more and needs a designer working alongside developers.

Ask for a clickable prototype before development starts. Changing a screen in a prototype costs a fraction of changing it after the code is written.

The back end

Many apps need a server to store user accounts, sync data and talk to outside services. Cloud back ends and managed database services have made this simpler, but they still need building, testing and monitoring. Count the number of data types, the number of user roles, and any third-party services such as payment, maps, messaging or analytics.

Ongoing hosting and third-party service fees are easy to forget. They appear as monthly line items after launch, so put them in the budget.

Team and location

Developer rates differ widely by country and experience level. A small senior team often delivers faster and with fewer defects than a larger junior one, even when the hourly rate is higher. Compare quotes on the number of people, their roles and the hours planned, not just the rate.

Check whether the quote includes QA, App Store submission, design and project management. A low quote that leaves those out will cost you later.

A simple way to estimate

Split the project into five parts: discovery and planning, design, front-end development, back-end development, and testing with release. Estimate each part in days for a small team, then multiply by the blended daily rate you have been quoted. Add a contingency of 15 to 25 percent, because requirements almost always change once users see the first build.

Then add the ongoing costs: hosting, third-party services, developer account fees, bug fixes and updates for each new iOS version. Apple releases a major iOS version every year, and apps need compatibility work to keep pace.

Questions to ask every agency

Ask who will work on your project and whether they are the people who will be on the call. Ask for two or three recent apps of similar complexity, and whether you can speak to a client. Ask how they handle changes to scope and what happens when a feature takes longer than estimated.

Ask about ownership of the source code and the App Store developer account. You should own both. Any agency that refuses to hand them over is asking you to stay dependent on them.

Where the money usually goes wrong

Most overruns come from unclear requirements, late design changes and features added during development. A written scope and a signed prototype reduce all three. Testing is the other common gap. Skipping device testing to save money usually leads to crashes on older iPhones and iPad layouts, and fixing those after release costs more than testing before it.

If you are comparing app types, our guides on trading app development cost and e-commerce app development cost show how the same cost drivers play out in two different categories. For a broader view of what makes an app worth building, see on-demand app development cost facts.
