Avast is a widely used antivirus, and most of the time its installer works without trouble. When it does not, the failures tend to look similar: the installer says setup is already running, the interface refuses to open after installation, or scans never start. Those are usually leftovers from an earlier install or a service that did not start, and a clean removal followed by a fresh install fixes most of them.

  • Step 2: Remove leftovers with the Avast uninstall tool
  • Step 3: Reinstall and check the service

Quick Answer: Download the installer from Avast's own site, then fix the most common errors in this order: remove leftovers with Avast's uninstall tool (Avast Clear), restart, reinstall, and check that the Avast Antivirus service is running. Keep one active antivirus product on the PC during the change, and avoid installers from third-party download sites.

Why setup problems happen

Setup errors usually come from one of three causes. An earlier Avast installation was not removed completely. A background service that Avast needs is stopped or set to manual. Or a second security product, a corrupted download, or a half-finished Windows update is getting in the way. Internet problems rarely cause the installer itself to fail, although a dropped connection can leave a partial download behind.

Step 1: Get a clean installer

Go to Avast's official site and download the installer from there. Mirrors on other download sites sometimes bundle extra software or are out of date. If the installer file is smaller than the official download or runs an unexpected program, delete it and start again.

Before installing, restart the PC and install any pending Windows updates. A restart clears locked files that can block the installer. If a device driver is also misbehaving, how to update outdated drivers on Windows 11 and 10 covers that separately.

Step 2: Remove leftovers with the Avast uninstall tool

When Windows reports that setup is already running, or the installer keeps failing at the same point, use Avast's dedicated uninstall tool, which Avast also calls Avast Clear. It is designed to remove Avast files, drivers and services that the normal Windows uninstaller leaves behind.

1. Download the tool from Avast's support pages and confirm the file is signed by Avast or Gen Digital before running it.

2. Right-click the file and choose Run as administrator, then click Yes if User Account Control asks.

3. Follow the prompts. The tool may offer to restart the PC in Safe Mode, which is recommended for stubborn cases but is not always required.

4. Let it finish, then restart Windows.

Avast's support article on the Avast Uninstall Tool explains each prompt in more detail. Do not run the tool while another antivirus is still active unless you plan to install a replacement straight away.

Step 3: Reinstall and check the service

Run the installer you downloaded in Step 1. If it fails again, make sure no leftover folders remain under Program Files, and check that Windows Update has no pending restart.

After installation, open the Services app (press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter). Find Avast Antivirus, check that it is running, and set its startup type to Automatic. If the service will not start, note any error message and check the Windows Event Viewer for entries from the same time.

When the interface will not open

If Avast installs but its window will not load, the usual cause is the same stopped service. Start the service as in Step 3 and try the interface again. If it still will not open, restart the PC, then reinstall with the uninstall tool and the fresh installer.

Do not change unrelated Windows services to fix this. Settings such as the remote desktop service have nothing to do with Avast, and changing them can cause new problems.

Scans that do not start

After a successful install, let Avast update its virus definitions before you run a full scan. Scans can fail or stall if the definitions are out of date or if the service has stopped. Start a quick scan first, then a full scan once the quick one completes.

If scans keep stopping, check whether Windows Security or another product is also running real-time protection. Two real-time scanners on the same PC can slow the system and block each other.

Still not working?

If the steps above do not help, try these next:

  • Run Windows Update and restart, then reinstall Avast.
  • Look in Event Viewer under Windows Logs for application errors that mention Avast around the time of the failure.
  • Contact Avast support with the exact error text and the Windows version. Support can often see the problem more quickly than a general troubleshooting article.
  • If the PC is a work machine, check with your IT team before removing security software, because a managed environment may require a specific product.
