5 Things You Should Know Before Buying an ID Card Printer

An ID card printer is great to have as it not only allows you to print ID cards with ease but depending on the ID card printer that you choose to get, some even come with special security features and settings that allow you to customise your ID card in accordance with your needs.

Here, we’ve put together a list of five things that you should consider when it comes to buying an ID card printer.

1. The volume of printing you require

One of the first things that you’d need to consider is the volume requirement. If you require a large number of ID cards for example, it makes more sense to invest in an ID card printer that will be able to produce those amounts. That way, it’ll not only be more efficient, but it’ll also make it much cheaper.

2. Single or Dual-Sided ID Card Printer

Then, you’ll also need to think about whether you require a single-sided or dual-sided ID card printer. As a rule of thumb, single-sided ID card printers are typically less expensive and are hence, more suitable for smaller batches. They’re not exactly the most efficient if you need to print dual-sided ID cards though.

For large batches that require high efficiency, dual-sided ID card printers would be the way to go.

3. Method of Printing

There are a few different methods, but the main two are dye sublimation and reverse transfer. Dye sublimation is the least pricey method but you will see a small white border around the cards.

If you’re looking for a high-quality print that with a full bleed and doesn’t have any border, reverse transfer printing would be your best choice.

4. Connection Type

Something else to consider would be the connection type. You need to make sure that the system you choose is compatible with your ID card printer. Almost all ID card printers will be fine to use with your PC via a USB connection, but not all will be compatible with Mac computers.

If you have a Mac computer, it’s important to ensure that your ID card printer is suitable. If you have multiple systems that need access to the ID card printer, it would be worthwhile going with a printer that has an ethernet connection.

5. Security and Physical Durability

Finally, the last thing that you would need to take into consideration is the durability of your ID cards as well as security features. With durability, if your ID card printer has a lamination setting, you’ll be able to ensure that your ID card is more long-lasting.

With security, you can also increase the overall security of your ID card by adding holographic stickers, watermarks and more.

Getting your ID card printer

An ID card printer is a great piece of equipment to have – especially if you’re looking to print ID cards. There are, however, quite a few things you should take into consideration before purchasing. After all, an ID card printer is a significant investment!
