Social Media Post Ideas for Small Businesses That Still Work

Most small businesses don't struggle with social media because they lack a platform. They struggle to decide what to post on a Tuesday afternoon when nothing new has happened. The ideas below are formats that still work in 2026, with a note on where each one fits best and how to keep it from turning into a sales pitch.

Table of Contents
  • Share what customers make
  • Post a snippet from your best article
  • Show the work behind the product
  • Run a poll or ask a real question
  • Share one fact from your field
  • Make a short tutorial or checklist
  • Match the format to the platform
  • How to tell what is working

Quick Answer: Post a mix of formats: customer stories and user-made content, behind-the-scenes clips, a single useful fact from your industry, a poll or question that invites replies, and a short tutorial or saved-worthy checklist. Rotate them weekly, and check which formats bring saves, comments or clicks to your site before you double down on any one.

Share what customers make

User-generated content is still one of the easiest ways to build trust. Ask a customer for a photo of your product in use, then post it with their permission and a line about what they did with it. Reviews, screenshots of a good message and short video testimonials all count.

It works because people believe other customers more than a brand's own claims. Tag the customer where the platform allows it, and reply to comments on the post, because the conversation under it does much of the persuading.

Post a snippet from your best article

If you publish blog posts or guides, pull one useful paragraph or a quick chart and post it with a link to the full piece. Keep the image readable on a phone, and put the key point in the first line so people don't need to tap "more" to understand it.

On platforms where links do not drive clicks well, such as some short-video feeds, post the key tip as a carousel or caption and mention the full article in your bio or pinned comment instead.

Show the work behind the product

Behind-the-scenes content works because it answers the questions customers never ask out loud: how it is made, who packs the order, what goes wrong during a shoot. A 30-second clip of a workbench, a kiln or a delivery route can outperform a polished ad.

Keep it real. Showing a bad batch and how you fixed it often builds more trust than a flawless product shot.

Run a poll or ask a real question

Polls and questions invite quick replies, and they can feed the next piece of content. Ask a choice that you can act on: which colour to restock, which feature to build first, which of two tutorial topics to write next. Then post the results and what you did about them.

Avoid polls that only ask people to like something. Replies to a specific question tell you far more than a tap.

Share one fact from your field

A single surprising statistic about your industry, with its source, gives people a reason to stop scrolling and a reason to follow you. Check the figure before you post it. Look for the original publisher, and note the year, because a number from 2019 presented as current will cost you credibility.

Pair the number with what it means for your audience. "Most customers never read past the first screen" is more useful than the raw percentage on its own.

Make a short tutorial or checklist

Tutorials and checklists get saved, and saves are a strong signal that content is useful. A five-step checklist for setting up a shared calendar or a quick fix for a common product problem gives readers something to come back to.

Keep each step to one line and make the final step a call to action, such as a link to your help page or a question for readers to answer in the comments.

Match the format to the platform

Carousels suit Instagram and LinkedIn document posts, where people swipe through a few slides. Short vertical video suits TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts. Long captions with a clear opening line suit Facebook and LinkedIn text posts.

Repurpose rather than rebuild. One tutorial can become a carousel, a 40-second clip and a text post, each cut for its platform.

How to tell what is working

Check saves, comments, shares and link clicks for each format over four weeks, rather than judging one post. Note which formats your audience responds to, and drop any that get no replies after a fair test. Social media platforms change how they rank content regularly, so treat your own numbers as the most reliable guide.
